3 Reasons to Start Your Career as an Independent Insurance Adjuster

It is unlikely that third graders have aspirations to become an insurance adjuster. It wasn’t on my list. Reality sets in and, as it does so often, you realize that you haven’t reached your third-grade potential as an astronaut or zookeeper at age 28. It is time to consider other career options. Insurance claims adjusting is a rare gem of a career choice. This was something I discovered through good fortune. You may be surprised at the many attractive aspects of being a claims adjuster, particularly an independent one. These are only three examples:

Benefit 1: Outstanding income potential

You might assume that the person telling you this was trying to sell something or unwell if you are told that you can make $1,500 per day as an independent claims adjuster. These numbers are comparable to the salaries of experienced doctors, lawyers, and business executives when they are spread over several months. Unbelievable? That would be my opinion. The truth is that every year, independent claims adjusters make thousands of dollars working on catastrophic insurance claims. In 2005, there were thousands of independent adjusters in the affected areas. They closed an average of $300-$400 per claim. An adjuster who is proficient in basic claims should be able to close at most 2-3 claims per day. This amounts to between $800 and $1200 per day. A great adjuster will close more than 5 claims per day. Cat adjusters can make well over $100,000 annually. Many adjusters can make this money in as little as three to six months. You can spend the rest however you like.

Independent adjusters are available to pick up the pieces after a hurricane, tornado, hail or earthquake. They receive a great deal of compensation for their efforts.

2nd Benefit: Relative ease in adjuster certification

To earn a career with comparable earnings as independent insurance adjusting, you will need to have completed 4-8 years of college or post-graduate study. In just three days, you can become a certified claim adjuster. Pre-licensing classes can be taken online or in person. Although these courses are quite intense, anyone can pass them.

Certification does not automatically mean employment. It doesn’t even mean that you are qualified for the job. To make up for any deficiencies in your professional profile, it is a good idea to continue training. Strong people skills and computer proficiency are essential for a claims adjuster. You should also have some knowledge about construction and insurance policies. Many hiring companies will assist adjusters, particularly in the most severe cases, in getting the right job training.

It takes between 8 and 12 years to become a doctor after graduating high school. In less than a month, you can be a mobile claims adjuster, licensed and trained, and ready to start your career.

3: Be your boss

Independent adjusters are independent workers. Claims adjusting does not require you to work 9-5. You will be submitting a list of claims electronically and you are expected to handle the claims handling process from start to finish. You are responsible for your own time, space, resources, and effort. Your boss is not responsible for how well you do. Your boss doesn’t decide how many hours you work. You also decide how much you make. It is an empowering and liberating feeling.

It is wrong to assume that insurance careers are boring and uninteresting. They can also be tangled up in complicated policies and unsavory business practices. This is a false assumption in claims adjusting. Imagine being able to navigate through devastated neighborhoods in order to help people rebuild their lives. As you handle their claim, you will be shown sincere gratitude and respect by most claimants. It is clear that claims adjusting doesn’t fit the mold of your average insurance job.

It is possible to make a great living helping people rebuild their lives without having your boss watching.

Although you may not have chosen to become an insurance adjuster as a career, it is likely that you did something adventurous and loved helping people. You may be surprised to learn that insurance claims adjusting is a great career option, with the additional bonus of a high income.
