Road Trip – Mexico Auto Insurance

You will have a different perspective on Mexico’s extraordinary people and places by taking a road trip. Mexico Auto Insurance covers you against the legal risks associated with driving your car in Mexico. You can also protect your investment in your vehicle from theft, collision, and other damages.

What’s the Difference Between Driving in Mexico?

Legal System Mexico’s legal system is built on the Napoleonic Code. (Yes, that’s France’s Napoleon Bonaparte. Mexico’s legal system is different from that of the United States. It was based on the English Legal Code. In Mexico, you are guilty until proven innocent. An auto accident is also considered a crime. To prove your financial responsibility and extend your stay in Mexico jail, you will need a Mexico Auto Insurance Policy. Mexico Auto policies must include Legal Aid and Bail Bonding coverage. WARNING! WARNING! No matter what your insurance contract may say, foreign auto insurance will not be of any assistance. You should have Mexico Auto Insurance to protect yourself if you drive across the border.

Driving Culture – Mexicans don’t drive like Americans. Driving is much more informal than expected, with lane markings and signage more suggestions than actual expectations. You will be tested on your defensive driving skills!

Road Conditions Mexico’s roads are a mix of superhighways and “works-in-progress”. Driving in rural areas can be a challenge with wild animals, unpredictable road conditions, and crazy buses. Traffic congestion can make urban areas more difficult. Mexican roads can be less well-lit and more dangerous at night.

Important Insurance Differences:

  1. Named Peril Insurance – Mexico Auto policies offer less comprehensive coverage, with protection for only certain events. Mexico Auto policies do not cover minor vandalism or theft of vehicle parts. You should ensure that you have the best protection possible.
  2. Legal Assistance & Bail Bond Protection – This coverage is essential for visitors, but it’s also available as an option. Mexican officials will recognize legal aid if you have an accident. This protection is included in your Mexico Auto policy.
  3. Driving while intoxicated – This is a double offense in Mexico. Mexico Auto Insurance policies will be voided if you drive while under the influence.
  4. Civil vs. criminal – Most accidents in Texas are treated as Civil Legal Events without the possibility of criminal prosecution. In our Civil Court system, your insurance company and the other party will determine fault and financial damage. An accident in Mexico is considered a crime. You are presumed guilty until proven innocent. Your car will be impounded and you may be taken into custody by the police until your fault is established.
  5. Auto Accident Injuries. Mexico does not have a Nationalized Healthcare system. Make sure your Mexico Auto policy provides adequate coverage if you or any of your passengers are injured in an accident. This will allow you to get the medical treatment you need. A short-term international health plan is also a good option (see HTH Worldwide below).
